Obituary of Dorothy May Smith

SMITH, Dorothy “Dot”- With hearts full of love and a touch of sadness, the family of Dorothy “Dot” Smith announces her peaceful passing at the age of 84 on September 23, 2024. Born in Halifax on December 2, 1939, to the late William and Rose (Meade) Barnes, Dot brought joy and warmth to everyone she met throughout her life.

Dot will be lovingly remembered by her children, Robert (Lori), Cheryl Franklin (Mark), and Wendy Graham (Doug), as well as her cherished grandchildren; Matthew (Jessica) and Andrew (Beverly); brother, Bill Barnes, along with many wonderful nieces, nephews, and a large extended family, will all miss her dearly.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert (Butch) Smith, as well as her brothers, Donald and Roy; sister Evelyn. We take comfort in knowing they are all enjoying a joyful reunion together.

For over 30 years, Dot worked at the Sears Catalogue Department, where she excelled at her job and made lifelong friends. Even after retirement, she stayed connected with her “Sears family,” enjoying annual trips and get-togethers filled with stories, laughter, and good cups of tea.

Dot’s days were always filled with joy and activity. She loved her Aqua Fit classes at the Captain William Spry Community Centre, followed by lively chats over tea at McDonald’s with her swimming buddies, catching up on all the latest news.

After moving from the family home in Harrietsfield to a seniors’ apartment in Halifax, Dot embraced a new community and made many new friends. Each evening, you could find her downstairs with snacks in hand, ready to solve the world’s problems with her “evening crew.”

Family and friends were the heartbeat of Dot’s life. She found pure joy in bringing everyone together, ensuring that no one left her side feeling hungry or without a smile. Dot adored her shopping adventures with her daughters, Cheryl and Wendy, cherishing every laugh and heartwarming conversation they shared during those outings. She also enjoyed the many little road trips taken with her daughters and sons-in-law, Mark and Doug. Dot was always up for a little road trip fun, whether she was whisked away for delightful lunches, scenic drives, or joyful visits with family. They sometimes drove up to the countryside to the farm where Dot and Butch spent many summers with their children, reliving the simple joys of family life and creating new memories together.

Whether splashing around in her son’s pool, enjoying an outdoor concert, or taking leisurely drives, Dot treasured these magical moments with her loved ones. If there was a gathering or event, you could always count on Dot to be the sunshine in the room, radiating warmth and cheer!

Dot especially adored her grandsons, Matthew and Andrew. She made countless trips to Manitoba to celebrate their big moments, like graduations, always their biggest fan and “sponsor” of their adventures. She happily contributed to concert tickets and events, as long as they promised to carry her name proudly as their sponsor.

Dot and her son Rob shared a special tradition of evening phone calls, where they would recount the day’s events and share laughter. Those conversations were precious to her, and she often brought the day’s news to her evening friends’ downstairs, adding a little extra sparkle to their discussions.

Dorothy’s vibrant spirit and boundless love touched everyone who knew her. Her family, friends, and community will forever cherish the memories of her kind heart and unwavering support.

The family would like to extend a bouquet of heartfelt thanks to the compassionate doctors, nurses, and personal care workers who cared for Dot with such kindness and professionalism. Also, the family would like to Sincerely thank Rev. Canon Brenda Clark at Emmanuel Anglican Church.

Arrangements and Cremation have been entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road.  In keeping with Dot’s wishes there will be a visitation held Thursday, October 3, 2024, from 6-8 at the Funeral Home.  A Celebration of Dot’s Life will take place Friday, October 4, 2024, at 1 p.m. located at Emmanuel Anglican Church, 322 Herring Cove Road, followed by a reception at the church hall.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Emmanuel Anglican Church or a charity of ones choice.
