Obituary of Kenneth Bernard MacDonald

 Age 91, Timberlea, NS, passed away suddenly on May 19, 2023 at the Halifax Infirmary, Halifax, NS.  Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late James and Catherine (O’Flaherty) MacDonald.

Ken worked his whole life in the printing business. He started out as a salesman at the Allen Print Limited in Halifax. This is also where he met his future wife Ethel. They courted, married, settled in Timberlea, and started their family. At this time Ken and Ethel started a print shop in Dartmouth with the help of Harold and Jack Hill. They had a great partnership in business and in marriage. They loved camping and their motorhome. They travelled across Canada more than once and to Florida yearly for many years.

Ken had a jovial and happy nature, always looking to make someone smile.  He was a kind and gentle man.  He loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren, Sarah and Maxwell.  Ken was an avid hockey fan and was a dedicated fan of the Halifax “Mooseheads”, often going to games with his brother, Lloyd and his nephew, Mike, and he got to know everyone around him.  He had a great sense of peace in the outdoors, having enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger years.  Ken was a current member of Granite Springs Golf Club, where he had been a member since their opening.  He was proud to have grown up in the country, and was still living at the “homestead” in Timberlea that he and his family had lived in their entire lives. 

Ken is survived by his son, Barry (Tammy Ann) of Timberlea and his daughter, Cathy (Brian Pond) of McKees Mills, NB, as well a brother, Lloyd.  Gramps/ Grampie will sadly be missed and always remembered by his grandchildren, Sarah and Maxwell.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years in 2014, Ethel (Hussey), his parents, brothers, Jim, Phil and Donnie, and a sister in infancy, Patricia.

Cremation has taken place under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, where a celebration of Ken’s life will be held on Monday, June 12, 2023 at 10am, with a reception to follow.  Interment will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in memory of Ken be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
