Obituary of Chalmers Taylor Anderson

The family is saddened to announce the death of Chalmers Anderson, on August 1, 2020 at home. Born at Glace Bay, NS,   September 4, 1929 to Isabel & Andrew Anderson.

Chal spent his early years in Glace Bay and moved with his family to Halifax in the mid 40’s.  Following a few years with Simpson’s in the Advertising Department he started work with Maritime Photo Engravers Ltd. and remained there for forty years, retiring in May, 1990. Curling became a passion in later years and Chal enjoyed almost 30 years with the sport.  He twice represented Nova Scotia at the National Senior Mens’ Championship. Chal belonged to the Masonic Order. He was Past Master of Acadia # 14 Lodge.  He was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church in Stewiacke.   Chal was formerly an active member of the Willow Bend Seniors’ Club.  He bowled regularly and enjoyed playing cribbage. In 1985, we started to build a cottage on our property at Toney River. This was a several year project, mostly all done by Chal & Doug on weekends and vacations. Wonderful times and memories were made there with family and friends.

Chal is survived by sons; Doug (Heather Wills) and Steve (Bernice Pyke) in Halifax,  Greg (Loretta Trelenberg) in Edmonton, AB and daughter; Sherri Hughes (Bill Christman) in Maple Bay, BC.  He will be greatly missed by his eight grandchildren; Tracey Anderson (Rob Lecky), Lisa (Mark) Cloran, Kassandra & Anthony Anderson all in Halifax, Kari Anderson (Andrew Goldie) in Port Perry, ON and Christopher Hughes (Denyse Hobbs), Corey Hughes (Jenna Spatafora) and Alisha Anderson, all in Edmonton, AB. He is also survived by one great-granddaughter, Taylor Cloran in Halifax. Chal leaves to mourn, two sisters, Olive Helpard of Halifax and Shaureen (Richard) Shephard of Fall River, NS.  Brother-in Law, Tom Nicholl of Winnipeg. He is also survived by several nieces & nephews.  He was predeceased by his loving wife, Ione Anderson,  his parents and  his sister, Verna Nicholl.

Cremation has taken place, under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd.  There will be no formal visitation or funeral at Chal’s request.

The family would like to give thanks to Dr. Jeff  Dempster and Cindy Bell, with the Palliative Care Unit, Dr. Cherie Collicott and Dr. Amy Nason (all of who’s outstanding care and genuine kindness were truly appreciated.) A very special thank you to all the wonderful staff at Melville Heights Retirement Home for their love and compassion, in the caring of Chal.  The entire family sends their gratitude.
