Sending condolences to Sheila and the family as well as friends of Mort, from me and my husband Franc. We are very sorry for your loss.
Mort was one of the first few colleagues that I had when I moved to Canada. It was impossible not to be impressed by his investment style, knowledge, and the edge that he added to investment stories as his brain was always in search of good stock ideas. Coupled with his sense of humour and an ever-cheerful laugh, he was always at the centre of any formal or informal gathering around the office.
He will be missed.

Mister Mort, sure to be missed by many. My condolences to immediate and extended family.
Mort and I shared a special connection, from his early days as an institutional money manager. He, more than many, knew well the challenges of managing money from the Maritimes. Not the physical ones, but the internal ones, the self doubts and artificial barriers that had to be overcome by the home team. Mort, was one of the champions of the region, and I deeply thank him for that.
Those that knew Mort watched him approach his work with excitement, every day. A good investment idea was conveyed with almost boyish enthusiasm, and in more cases than not, with good reason. Thanks Mort, for all of your hard work, and critical investment thinking.
But as one of his ‘regular’ foursome, I knew Mort on the golf course too. We even shared a hair-raising event or two in the motorized golf carts (no, Mort wasn’t driving). Mort always made me feel good, when he’d take one of my golf tips into consideration, and then successfully execute the shot! I’d often retort, somewhat in amazement, “You owe me $20!”. In some rounds, the 20’s would really add up, but payment came in the form of his good fellowship, on and off the course. And that was just fine.
Mort, you lived life on your own terms. And that was just fine too…

Hello Melvin,
Sorry to hear of the loss of your brother Morton. He worked in the same building as my brother Dan in Halifax and they would see each other in passing, two Seal Covers who got a start in putting up smoked herring.
Your brother was always the standard for academic performance and smarts in my time. I did not know him personally very well, but we have a long history of work and friendship and we wish you the best during this time.

Mort was my mom’s financial director for so many years. He was such a total gentleman. He made my mom Nora O’Leary feel so special bringing her flowers when visiting her at parkland in Clayton park. They became great friends, he shared stories of his dog with her.
Mort was one of her pall bearers. Not something you think of a financial advisor. His advise to her kept her where she wanted to live. She met him when she was widowed. After her death he was such a great help to me in settling her estate. I was so saddened to read about his death. I’m hoping mom and mort are chatting it up now. Please accept my family’s condolences
