Obituary of Shirley Montgomery
Montgomery, Shirley Beatrice: 84, Halifax, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2009 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, NS. Born in Lunenburg, NS, she was a daughter of the late Captain Foster and Jenny (Tanner) Corkum. Shirley was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who possessed a nurturing care for others. She was a graduate of Mount Allison Academy and Commercial College. Prior to marriage, she worked at the Lunenburg Foundry, and after her marriage at the Dept. of Family Allowance and the Halifax Regional and Halifax North Libraries for 23 years, part of the time with The Shut-In Services. She retired in 1986. Shirley was a member of Bethany United Church, where she taught Sunday school for a short period of time. Shirley is survived by her son, John (Bev), PEI, her daughters, Janet Mason, Bonnie Walker, and Claire Reynolds, grandchildren, Melissa and Megan Montgomery, Ben and Lisa Mason (Troy Roberts), Andrew and Christopher Walker, and Kyle and Kaylan Reynolds, one great-grandson, Colten Mason-Roberts, a brother, Arthur Corkum, Toronto, and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Corkum (wife of the late Lynn Corkum), as well as several nieces, Jane Young (John), Valerie Rowlands (Brian), Heather Montgomery, and Patricia Ranalli (Gary), and nephews, Steve Corkum (Terry), Dr. Douglas Corkum (Betty Flora), USA, Fred Oliver (Hazel), Jim West, John Whiteway, and Bob Montgomery. She was predeceased by her loving husband, John E. “Ted” Montgomery, a son-in-law, Graham Mason, a brother, Lynn Corkum and a sister, Patricia “Patsy” Haughn.
Resting at JA Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, NS (477.5601), where visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8 PM. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at 2 PM from Bethany United Church, 7171 Clinton Avenue, Halifax, NS B3L 3Y8 (455-0521), with Rev. Vincent Ihasz as clergy. Interment will take place at Fairview Lawn Cemetery. Family flowers only, in lieu, donations in memory of Shirley may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
