Obituary of Mary Fairchild (Cox)

FAIRCHILD (Cox), Mary Louise — 90, Halifax, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2009, in Abbie J. Lane Memorial Building, QEII. Born in LaTabatiere, Que., she was a daughter of the late John B. and Florence L. (Robertson) Cox. Mary moved to Halifax as a child where her family lived on Almon Street. She attended Bloomfield School. In 1949 she moved to Montreal with her husband and daughter. While there she fulfilled her lifelong dream and graduated second in a class of 58 students, as an LNA, from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 1963. She then worked as a nurse at the Montreal Children's Hospital. Mary later moved back to Halifax, then to Georgetown, P.E.I., where she worked at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown for many years. She later accepted a position as plant nurse at Seafood 2000, and continued her nursing career into her early 70s. She moved back to Halifax in 1998 after the death of her granddaughter to live with her daughter until her death. Mary will be lovingly remembered and never forgotten by her daughter, Florence Lelia Fairchild-Pace, Halifax; grandchildren, Alexandra (Daren Carr) of Portugese Cove; Kirk Ocean Fairchild (Renee) of Fernie, B.C.; grandson-in-law, Michael J. Williams, Halifax; great-grandchildren, Conor, Brett, Erin Mary Lelia, all of Halifax; Olivia Mary and Charlotte of Fernie, B.C.; chosen great-grandchildren, Emily and Annabell, Halifax; brother, Maynard Cox, Dartmouth; sister, Vivian Goulden, Halifax; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Cox, Dartmouth and Evelyn Cox, Halifax; many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews; dear friend of 72 years, Rita Tanner of Halifax and many cherished friends in Prince Edward Island. She was predeceased by her beloved granddaughter, Mary-Louise (Pace) Williams; sister, Jean in infancy; brothers, John "Jack" and Russell. Arrangements are under the care and direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Spryfield (477-5601). By request there will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 11, at 2 p.m. in Emmanuel Anglican Church, with Rev. Diana Brett-Frye as celebrant. Interment to follow in Emmanuel Anglican Cemetery, with a reception to follow the burial in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to the Bone Marrow Patient Support Travel Fund, QEII.
