Obituary of Brian Cartwright
CARTWRIGHT, Brian A.H., Cmdr. (ret’d), Bear River. July 17, 1924 - April 25, 2009. Born in Bray, Republic of Ireland, Brian was the son of the late Leo George Cartwright and Dorothy Evelyn (Cummings) Cartwright. After immigrating to the United States in 1926, he lived in Needham, Massachusetts and completed his high school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Planning to continue into architecture, he instead moved to Canada and entered the RCAF in 1942. In 1945 he joined the RCN and served most of his career on the Atlantic Coast, serving in several destroyers and frigates. He had NATO postings to Rome and Virginia, retiring from the RCN in 1972, when he became involved in the Halifax shipping industry. In 1979 he retired to the tranquility of Bear River where he enjoyed his gardens, the outdoors and hosting many friends he had made through his colourful life. Brian is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Marion ( Chute ) Cartwright, daughter Patricia ( Wayne ) Shattuck, Portuguese Cove, and son John ( Margaret) Cartwright, Greenfield. He was predeceased by brothers Anthony and Gabriel. Deepest thanks go to his long time devoted friends/caregivers Seretha Balcom and Joe Gesner of Bear River. Thanks also to the staff at Melville Lodge, Halifax, for his later care. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in Brian’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society.
