Obituary of Gerald King

KING, Gerald Daniel (lovingly known as Grampa Joe) - 83, Halifax, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at the QEII, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Port Felix, Guysborough County, he was a son of the late Hubert and Felicity (Fougere) King. Gerald was a long time member of the Longshoremans' Union and a member of Vimy Branch #25. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and as a man who loved his family dearly. He was an animal lover and especially enjoyed the company of his cats, Susie and Bandit. He is survived by sons Wayne (Janet), Birchy Head; Victor; Michael and Terry, all of Halifax; daughters Bev (Paul Sweeney) King, Spryfield; Merle (Don) Pettipas, Aylesford Lake; Shirley (Raymond) Burke, Lower Sackville; Mary (Gavin) Alward, Halifax; grandchildren Lora and Mike Sweeney; Debbie and Lisa Burke; Kim Shankel, Kevin and Kris Pettipas; Olivia and Emily Alward; Scott and Stephanie King; Madeline Kircher, several great-grandchildren; sisters, Rita Walburne, Kansas City; Isabel King, Victoria B.C.; Agnes Gartland, Toronto; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by wife Mary (DeLorey); brothers Patrick, Dennis and Joseph; sisters Margaret Collins and Marie King. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of 3 and 11 Manor, 3 Centre Northwood, Northwood bus drivers, the Dialysis unit of the VG, especially Norma Jean, the staff of the QEII 4.1, and Dr. Stephen Gibbon. Arrangements are under the care and direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, NS (477.5601) where visitation will be held on Friday, December 12, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Burial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, December 13 at 10 AM from St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Spryfield, with Fr. Rob Arsenault as celebrant, assisted by Fr. Craig Christensen. Interment will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. Donations in Gerald’s memory may be made to the Dialysis Unit of the VG or the SPCA.
