Obituary of Iona Ashton
ASHTON, Iona Lyndall (DeWinter) - 90, Halifax, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 9, 2008, in Melville Lodge. Born on November 4, 1917 in Factorydale she was a daughter of the late Allison and Emily (Robar) DeWinter. Iona came to Halifax in the late 30’s, working as a waitress during the war. She continued with this work on and off until the early 60’s. She became very involved with the Spryfield Legion in its early years. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary and held many offices including President. Iona had varied interests including the Legion, needlework, crosswords and politics, having worked for one of the Parties for many years. She will be sadly missed by her husband Donald with whom she had been with for 63 years. She is also survived by daughters Sylvia (Clarence Jr.) Riley, Halifax; Janet Tupper, Aylesford; son Eric (Linda), Halifax; eleven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; nine great great-grandchildren; brother Vaughn, Buffalo, NY. She was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters. A special thank you to the staff of east wing Melville Lodge for their kindness and care during her brief stay, her friends on Lewis Street who never forgot her and to Maureen Meek of Nova Scotia Continuing Care for her great compassion and understanding in difficult circumstances. Special mention to her devoted granddaughter Debbie Riley, whose care and unconditional love made life easier for Iona. Arrangements are under the direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Spryfield (477-5601). According to Iona’s wishes there will be no visitation or service.
