Obituary of Ruby Bethune

Bethune (Awalt), Ruby Adelia: 84, passed away in the QEII Health Sciences Centre on May 16, 2008, after a brief illness. She was a daughter of the late George and Elizabeth (Hame) Awalt. Born in Musquash, NB, she resided in Halifax for the last 50 years and spent her summers at her cottage in Seacrest, Pictou County. She was formerly employed as a bookkeeper in the dental office of Dr. George Clark. She was an active volunteer, including the Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre Auxiliary, which raised money for the hospital through the Gift Shop. She was an active curler, playing Ladies, Mixed, and Senior competitions in the Halifax area, serving on different committees and teaching curling. For a time she was the club president for Glencoe Ladies Curling Club and only recently she retired as the historian of the Ladies Metro Bonspiel. Ruby had a life-long interest in creating pottery and teaching crafts to others. Ruby was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Bethune. Surviving are daughters, Nancy (James) Cleveland, Parrsboro, and Elizabeth Bethune, Mount Uniacke, and sister Mary (Don) Ward, Halifax. A memorial service and reception will be held Monday, May 26, 2008 at 2 PM in J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Spryfield, (477.5601). Interment to take place in Haliburton Cemetery, Pictou this summer. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Interment condolences may be left at www.walkerfh.com
