Obituary of Hance James Logan Hollis
HOLLIS, Hance James Logan … 85, Halifax, passed away January 23, 2008 at home. Born on March 19, 1922 in Minto Mines, N.B., his family moved to the Halifax area where he grew up and lived most of his life. At the earliest opportunity, March of 1940, Hance enlisted with the Princess Louise Fusiliers to serve his country during the Second World War. He served in the Italian Campaign where he was wounded and with the Liberation of Holland. When he returned to Canada after the war, he obtained employment with CN Railways. He held various positions including porter, warehouseman and motorman. As a porter with CN operations, he assisted many folks arriving through Pier 21 to move on to other parts of Canada. He then transferred to CN Express in 1948. In 1949, Hance commenced operating Express Delivery Truck in Dartmouth. For many years he was the sole driver in that community. He concluded his career as a motorman on the Express Delivery Truck in downtown Dartmouth upon his retirement in 1979. He was an avid dancer and bowler. He loved to play cards. Hance is survived by his sons, Fred (Yolande), Shelburne, Ont.; Scott (Janice), Winnipeg, Man.; Dana (Claire), Riverview, N.B.; sisters, Freda McGrath, Winnipeg, Man.; Greta Webber, Lower Sackville; dear friend, Elaine Wells, Halifax; grandchildren, Steven, Keri, Kristen, Devon, Jennifer, Keely, and Logan; five great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Angel (McGready); infant daughter, Sandra Joan; sister, Ardella “Dell” Greeno. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Spryfield (477-5601), with visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 Sunday, January 27. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with a reception to follow, Pastor Wade Harvey officiating.
