Obituary of Edith May Hartnett
HARTNETT, Edith May - 97, Halifax, passed away on December 30, 2007 at her residence. Born in 1910, Edith was a survivor of the Halifax Explosion, having been featured in several news items and interviews concerning events of the explosion as she was 7 years old at the time and had full recollection of the events on that day, December 6, 1917. She was a daughter of the late Alexander and Mary Amelia (Griswold) Murphy, both of Halifax at the time of her birth. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Hartnett; sisters, Ruth Rafters, Beryll Kelleher, and Muriel Vincent; brothers, Gerald and James Murphy. Edith is survived by her sons, Edward “Ted”, Halifax; Richard (Gail), Oromocto, N.B.; daughter Carole Ann, Halifax; grandson, Daniel (Kathryn) Hartnett; great-granddaughters, Riley and Amelia, Oromocto, N.B. She is also survived by sisters, Rita Tanner, Halifax; and Malou Unobskey, Stratford, Conn.; brother, Alexander Murphy, Durham Bridge, N.B. As per Edith’s request, cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Spryfield (477-5601). No service or flowers by request. An interment of cremated remains will take place in spring at St. John’s Cemetery, New Glasgow.
