I was saddened to see Dr. Rojo's obituary in today's Chronicle Herald. It was a great piece of writing, evoking the man that I grew to know in my years at Saint Mary's. Dr. Rojo was the kind of person who could tell you a story without being boring, who would demonstrate through his many projects an almost inexhaustible energy, and whose recollections were invariably informative. I was most surprised to see his age. I would never have believed that he was 96 years old; far too young in attitude and action for that. He will be missed.

I consider myself privileged to have had an opportunity to get to know Dr. Rojo. He was an inspirational man, continuing to learn and make contributions throughout his entire life. I hope that one day when I might need a cane that I use it as he did. Condolences to Mrs. Rojo and his entire family Hugh Broders

Dear Rojo Family, We are deeply sorry for your loss. We, too, will greatly miss Alfonso - who was, indeed, a Renaissance man. He was a pleasure to talk to - we all loved to hear about his life experiences - and he was an excellent Spanish language motivator for myself, Hanka. (I will really miss our chats and his regular visits to Saint Mary's University Library.) Moreover, he was an inspiration to many individuals, in a multitude of ways. A man of fascinating intelligence, wit, and humour, and harbouring a sunny and optimistic disposition, he will be truly missed at the University, and beyond. He was a real gentleman!

We remember with fondness Dr. Rojo's commitment to science education and his willingness to help students and faculty whenever needed. We will keep him in our prayers.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends. Dr. Rojo and I worked in the same lab at the Museum. He knew I would be interested in his student plant collections from Spain. We spent many months discussing the differences in education between the two countries. I am certain he touched the lives of his many students.

Dear Enriqueta, Alfonso ,Enrique, and Monica please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of your beloved husband and father. For me he was the ultimate teacher and the guiding light to my future occupation as a fisheries biologist. While I studied at St. Mary's University I held in awe his knowledge and teaching skills and it was always my intention to contact him and thank him for changing my life, and I did just that many years later. From then on we communicated by email and he asked me if I would pick up a pebble from the Rio Urbel near Burgos on my travel along the Camino de Santiago in 2014. I did that and in appreciation of the "pebble" he sent me his lengthy and fascinating Memoir of his life and family. I recently returned from trekking the Northern Camino de Santiago along the Catabrian Sea and was looking forward to sending him an account of that adventure, but alas that will not come to pass. His memory and past gifts to me will never diminish with time. Adieu and God give you strength to overcome your sadness . Sincerely, Rick, a most appreciative former student
