Obituary of Douglas Leo DeYoung
DEYOUNG, Douglas “Doug” Leo- Age 72 of Halifax, it is with extreme sadness we announce the passing of Douglas Leo DeYoung on October 14, 2024, at the QEII Halifax Infirmary Site. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Leo and Blossom (Young) DeYoung.
Doug started working at Renault on Barrington Street in Halifax then moved on to Speedy Print in Halifax for 35 years. Later in life, you could find him and Barb taking care of various apartment buildings around Halifax. Doug was known as a hard worker and a man who liked to keep busy. He enjoyed building things around the house and tinkering with cars occasionally. If you ever asked anyone to describe Doug's demeanor or his personality, it was always the same thing “A big teddy bear and a go-with-the-flow kind of guy”. Doug always put everyone else first and would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need. When Doug wasn’t helping a fellow friend, you could find Doug at home, he was very laid back. Most of the time catching up on Coronation Street, in his favorite Lazy-boy. He loved Saturday nights spending time playing cards with neighbors and friends. He was a huge camping buff throughout his life and had a strong passion for older campervans. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing Hockey and riding motorcycles. Some of Doug’s hobbies included fishing, antique radios/CB Radios, and a soft spot for collecting Coca-Cola Christmas Bears.
He is survived by his partner, Barb Cunningham whom he loved deeply; ex-spouse, Anne-Marie Carr; son, Matthew (Erika) DeYoung; stepchildren, Sean and Kelly; siblings, Leah (Bill) Hughes; nephew, Jeffery Hughes; step-grandchildren, Cameron, Aiden, Christian and Isabelle; Doug is predeceased by his daughter, and guardian angel, Adrienne.
Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, Halifax. In keeping with Doug’s wishes there will be no visitation or Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the MS Society of Canada. Please feel free to share thoughts or stories of Doug in the guestbook below.
