Obituary of Gary Hanson Blaikie
BLAIKIE, Gary Hanson- 82 of Herring Cove. It is with great sadness that the family of Gary Hanson Blaikie announces his passing on March 25, 2024. Born in Great Village, N.S., he was the son of the late Stanley and Lillian Olive (Rushton) Blaikie.
Gary lived most of his childhood in the town of Truro. He studied commerce at Mount Allison University and also played offensive guard for the Mounties Football team. He completed his MBA at Dalhousie University. In 1974, Gary started working for the Halifax/Dartmouth Port Commission. He eventually became Executive Director with responsibility for marketing and special projects, including the development of the South End Container Terminal. During that time, he purchased his home in Herring Cove where he created the homestead for his wife and three children. In 1984, he started his own business designing computer software for local medical offices and accounting software for Caribbean port authorities.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Patricia (Hogan); children, Kathleen (Alan) Hoskins, Martha (Michael) Innocente, and Duncan (Katy) Blaikie; five beautiful grandchildren, Giorgia, Wendy, Ryan, Arthur, and William; brother, Richard; sisters, Brenda MacLeod, and Linda Dowell (Harry); many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. He was predeceased by brothers, Gordon, Gloud (Carol), and Brian (Heather); sister-in-law, Roberta Blaikie.
Gary fought his illness until his last breath in his home, surrounded by family, with the most beautiful view of the cove from his bedroom window. He was grateful every day for the life he lived.
Special thank you to all of the medical staff, family, and friends who helped Gary during the last 18 months. In keeping with Gary’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at The Lord Nelson Hotel, 1515 South Park St., Halifax, on Friday, April 5, from 4-7 pm.
