Obituary of Ralph Arthur Evans
Dad “Puppy”, passed away peacefully at the Halifax Infirmary Hospital, surrounded by his loving family on June 16th, 2023, at the age of 84. Born in Halifax, he was the oldest son of the late Edward and Mary Evans.
Ralph dedicated his life to his family. He was married to the love of his life, Barbara, for 40 years. He lived for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; always being a part of their lives and attending everything they were involved in. He boasted with pride when he spoke of each of them. Well-loved in the community and a true people person, Ralph could engage in conversation with anyone. He was genuinely interested in everyone’s goals, interests, and accomplishments. He was a sports enthusiast and loved to watch a good game. He was jovial in nature, kind, giving, and a real social butterfly. He always had a treat to share (especially chocolate bars) and would give the shirt off his back. In his younger years, you could find him in the rink playing hockey, golf, going on Sunday drives, spending time at their camper, or at a community dance with Barb. His memory and the values he taught his children will live on through his family.
Ralph held many jobs throughout his life, with the most recent being at Dow and Duggan Log Homes where he worked for 25 years. He was a valued employee, an asset to their company, and knew everything there was to know about log homes. He was proud to have owned the Shell gas station in the community which gave him an opportunity to interact with many people. He loved to talk to people about the various jobs he did over his lifetime.
Surrounded by great friends, Ralph lived at Woodlyn Manor in Hammonds Plains for the past 15 years, where he enjoyed the companionship and camaraderie of his neighbours. They became his second family, and he appreciated their time spent gathering in the lounge.
Ralph is survived by his four children; Paula Rice (Paul), Darrell Evans (Christine), Lisa Walker (Jeff), Carrie Garand (Richard), and former son in law, David Garand. Affectionately known as “Puppy”, he will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his seven surviving grandchildren; Fallon (James), Tristian (Alison), Alyssa, Dawson, Rachel, Landon, Sydney, and his five great-grandchildren; Evalena, Claire, Locklyn, Blake, and Grayson. He is also survived by his three step-grandchildren, Darren, Holley, and Isabella, and five step-great-grandchildren; Jayla, Thomas, Xavier, Bryson, and Rayanna, as well as many nieces and nephews. Ralph is survived by his siblings; Donald, Ronald, Barbara, and Shirley. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Barbara Muriel Evans, in 2001, and his granddaughter, Hillary, in 2023. He is also predeceased by his siblings; Reginald, Richard, Andrew, Clifton, Phyllis, and Sharon.
We would to like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at the Halifax Infirmary Hospital for taking great care of Dad. We would also like to thank Carol Clarke (extended family), for her overwhelming support.
Cremation has taken place, and a service in memory of Ralph will be held on Tuesday, July 4th at 1:00pm at J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, with a reception to follow. Interment will take place later that evening at St. Timothy’s Cemetery in Prospect Village. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Ralph to KidSport Nova Scotia to provide an opportunity for all children to play. In memory of Ralph, we would also encourage you to buy a child a treat. That would make him smile!
