Obituary of Genevieve Sabina Anne Power

(nee Spearns) Age 85 of Halifax, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, Sunday, October 30, 2016. Genny was born in Halifax, on September 26, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ida (Johnson) Spearns. Genny married the love of her life, Henry Power in 1951 and together they raised eight children. She was a homemaker, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother "GG" and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a kind, generous person who had a love for life and great sense of humor, right to the very end. Genny loved to spend time outdoors, enjoyed going for walks and tending to her garden. Her many interests included oil painting, knitting, crocheting, and baking. She was especially known for her pound cake, which was enjoyed by her children, grandchildren and many friends. Her caring nature was shown in her volunteering with the VON, meals she prepared for Hope Cottage and help she gave to those in need. Over the years, she became a surrogate grandmother to the neighbourhood children and she loved their visits. She is survived by her children, Patrick (Nancy), Christopher (Patricia), Matthew, Maurice (Cydney), Elizabeth Camano (Jim), Bernadette Smith (Roy), Anne (Tony Purcell) and Vincent; her grandchildren, Heather Power (Jared), Madison Power, Jessica Power-Leach (Stuart), Samantha Power (Bryan), Aurora Camano, Stephen Smith (Emma), Ashley Smith and Jillian George (Scott); step granddaughter Christina Purcell; great-grandchildren, Daniel Kinch, Stevie Leach and Brantley Gillis; sisters, Bertha Grandy (Paul) and Theresa Spearns; sister-in-law, Kathleen Stanhope; many nieces, nephews and friends including her lifelong friends Donna Leblanc and Genevieve McGinnis, who will miss her dearly. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Henry; precious grandson, Matthew; brothers, John and Robert; sisters, Mary Sullivan and Rita Christian; many brothers and sisters in law; and dear companion, Elwood Forbes (Ally). The family would like to thank the many doctors, palliative care, VON and home care workers, who helped in her final days. Visitation will be held on November 3rd from 7 – 9:00 pm at J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road. Funeral will be held at Saint Catherine of Siena Parish, 6476 Bayers Road, Halifax on Friday, November 4th. At 11:00 am. Reception to follow at Saint John the Baptist Church Hall, 26 Purcell’s Cove Rd, following the Mass. Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hope Cottage or a charity of your choice.
