Rick's path and mine crossed many times over the last 40 or so years. I always enjoyed his sense of humor and fellowship. Like so many good friends juggling life's requirements, we did not meet up often enough. Whenever we did, Rick always made it easy to pick up where we had left off. He was a great guy. Dear Gates Family: Please accept my sincere and deepest sympathy in the loss of your dear husband Patrick. I have great and fond memories of you both at Master Mariners functions with my late love Vivian. Patrick had that ready smile and friendly manner that made him a dear friend of many especially seafarers. My sincere condolences to Rick's family. I first met Rick over 40 years ago on the Irving tanker fleet. He was a positive influence on my career and many others as we made our way to more senior positions on board the ships of the tanker fleet. His passing is certainly a shock to me and I am thankful that I had the opportunity to work with him over the decades.

I’m am so very sorry to hear of Rick’s passing. He hired me as a shipping agent back in the Kent Line days in Saint John, NB. I have many fond memories of him during those days. He always was so friendly and positive. His smile was always uplifting. Thinking of you all during this difficult Tim.

I first met Rick when he moved from New Brunswick and came to know him as a caring and thoughtful man. He was one of the first to call me when he heard of my own health issues and gave me some helpful support and information. I would run into him at many marine related events and we woukd always have a great chat. Rest in peace my friend.
