Obituary of Gerald Dennis Nathan Harris

It is with great absolute sadness that the family of Gerald Dennis Nathan Harris, of Jollimore, announce his passing on May 13, 2021 in his bed peacefully at Northwood surrounded by the love of his oldest daughter, Kathy and oldest granddaughter, Karie.  Gerald was born in Shelburne on October 5, 1933.  He was the son of the late Dennis and Lucy Harris, the oldest of three children.  Gerald moved to Halifax in his early 20’s and married the love of his life, Myrtle Matilda Blakeney in 1955, who he stayed eternally faithful to after her death in 1991.  Gerald was thoroughly devoted to his church, Parkhill United, where he remained a loyal board member, right up to his death.  Gerald retired from the National Health & Welfare Department where he worked as a Lab Technician in the Health Protection Branch, and would enjoy telling stories of some of the bizarre things he would see while working there.  Gerald spent many years as a member of his Ham Radio Club and he enjoyed using his radio gear to collect the weather from all over Nova Scotia and reported it to CBC.  He enjoyed collecting unique coins and could always be found tinkering on one project or another, which earned him his nickname of “Inspector Gadget”.  For many years Gerald could be found working in his workshop and mastering his craft of woodworking and enjoyed sharing his projects with his family.  We, the family are very proud to still display those items in our homes, and will always hold them dear.  Besides his parents and his astounding wife, Myrtle, Gerald was predeceased by his brother, Earl Harris.  Left to mourn and to miss him dearly are his 5 children, Kathy (Dale) Lewin, James (Margaret) Harris, Lynn (Mark) Flemming, Rick Harris & Cindy (Edward) Oakley, his 7 grandchildren, Jeff (Judy) Flemming, Karie (Chad) Raymond, Vicki (Alain) Veilleux, Kory Flemming, Michelle (Kyle Dempsey) Harris, Morgan and Sophia Oakley, his 7 great grandchildren, Jessica, Caleb, Samantha, Nicole, Kody, Riley and Colt. He is also survived by his sister, Ruby Harris.  The family would like to express their genuine gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the staff of 4C in Northwood, Halifax Campus.  Especially the sincere genuine kindness shown on his last day by Wendy, Swami, Pam and Renee.  Due to pandemic restrictions, a private interment will be held at graveside.  A memorial service will be scheduled at a future date.
