Kay was "Gug" to me. My aunt. My mother's sister. She was an important person throughout my life, but it was only recently I learned the big role she played in my infant days. She was a young nurse and my mother no doubt appreciated the expert loving care and support. I came to know how much Gug was there in those first few months when I came upon a series of handwritten notes on some lovely blue stationary. On those notes, four lengthy essays, Gug described my every movement and sound. It was so heartwarming to read, but what blew me away, was the poetry of her writing. I was an ordinary baby. But not in her eyes, nor in her words. I'll share just a couple of her beautifully crafted lines:
"She is a happy, unrepentant, non-conformist knowing nothing about time, morality or good manners and doesn't care. She's the centre of her world which she surveys with Buddhalike serenity and mild curiosity as she approaches three months."
Seems she knew me before I knew myself. I felt a strong connection to Gug my entire life. I always admired her medical know how. And I was so impressed when she went to university. I borrowed some of her texts for her philosophy courses. I didn't understand them, but my super-smart aunt did. I also admired her painting skills. She was doing creative abstracts, and they were oh-so-cool. Gug was also funny and could always make me laugh. She was a tiny woman, and whenever she put on a hat, it was way too big. So she'd pull it down over her eyes, and say "I vant to be alone" stealing a line from an old movie. She loved that joke and so did I.
(P.S. - Gug was a nickname, because I apparently couldn't say "Kay". It stuck. She was Gug to me, my sister and our children.)
I loved her. I admired her. I will miss her.
