Obituary of John Edward Dunphy
Dunphy, John Edward: Halifax, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at the age of 72, just short of his 73rd birthday. Born in Saint John, NB, he was a son of the late John Dunphy (Norma McMillan) and Dorothy (Arseneau). John was raised in Saint John, NB by his maternal grandparents, Clarence Joseph Arseneau and Annie "Minnie" (LeBlanc). At the age of 17, he came to Halifax to live with his father, step-mother, brothers and sisters. He met the love of his life, Carol, and in 1966, they were married in St. Patrick’s Church, Halifax, NS. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2016. John had many trades over the span of his life; yet, he is most remembered for his role with Sears Canada as an electronics technician. John had a natural talent for repairing electronics and is said to have crawled into a floor model radio as a toddler and repaired it. John worked with Sears from 1972 until his health made it impossible for him to continue. He was beloved by his colleagues and the company decided to create a suitable position for his condition where he worked until he retired in 1999. John was an avid animal lover. He loved animals of all kinds. He was so thrilled that he got to pet a wolf on his 69th birthday. He created and maintained a fishpond in the backyard. He fed the stray cats in the neighbourhood, even while he was sick. He really enjoyed that. Animals seemed to sense that he liked them as they would seek him out. Even the most difficult animal would let him pet them.
He was a husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Carol A. (Nobles), and daughter, Tara Dunphy (Michael), Toronto, ON, as well as sisters, Karen Dunphy, Joanne (Russ) Dunphy-LaBelle, Maureen (John) McMillan, all of Dartmouth, NS, Cathy Finlay, Kitchener, ON, brother, Michael Dunphy (Leah), Prince George, BC, sisters-in-law, Sharon (Harold) Millie, Shellbrook, SK, Patricia (Gerry) Makinson, Winnipeg, MB, and brother-in-law, Ian Nobles (Joan), Ft. McMurray, AB, as well as several aunts and uncles, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and step-mother, his brother, Budd "Wayne" Dunphy, and sister, Elaine (Dunphy) Grijm.
The family would like to thank all those who were involved in the care, medical or otherwise, given to John during his illness. Special thanks to Lynn Bradley, Robert Hagen, all the doctors involved in his care from the diagnoses to the final stages, his family physician and staff, the VON, the Home Health Teams from Northwood, and RJF Healthcare, the doctors and nurses of the Capital Health Authority Palliative Care Unit, and the Pharmacy Team of Lawton’s Drugs, Halifax Shopping Centre.
Cremation has taken place under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, NS (902.477.5601), where visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.
