Obituary of Douglas Louis Young

Halifax, it is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Douglas Louis Young, age 89, on July 6, 2020 at the Veterans Memorial Hospital. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Gordon and Eileen (Conway) Young.

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Theresa (Soward), who he was married to for 67 years; son, Kern (Karen), Halifax; daughters, Pamela Young, Germany; Shelley Allard(Henry Rahn), Ottawa, Ont.; brother, Gordon (Lorna), Dartmouth; sister, Mary Billard, Halifax; grandchildren, Michelle (Thorston), Dennis (Navina), Sharlene (Luc); great grandchildren, Maike, Marie, Sophie, Briana, Kaelynn and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by daughter, Sheila Elizabeth (Beth) in infancy and brother, Kenneth.

Doug enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1948. During his 28 years of faithful and devoted military service, he served 14 months in Korea. The family traveled many miles, lived in several places in Canada and 3 years in Germany; along the way meeting many wonderful people and making life-long friends. After retiring from the military in 1976, Doug continued work with DND - Defence Construction Canada for 10 years.

Doug visited his place of worship regularly and found great solace in doing so. Doug was a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1963 and was often busy helping their cause. His leadership was of benefit to many.

Through his life Doug enjoyed many sports – hockey, baseball, curling, golf, darts, fishing – to name a few. He spent hours in his shed, working, inventing, honing his witticisms and prowess. He loved to read, do his crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, dance, cook, garden, camp and birdwatch. He loved listening to his marching music and CCR.

The family wishes to express their deepest thanks and gratitude to the nurses, doctors, social workers, all staff of 6East at Veterans Memorial Hospital. During this difficult time of corona virus they provided excellent care and compassion to Douglas and when his family were unable to visit, they were there to listen and support him. Also, thank you to Dr. Jock Murray and medical staff at the QEII Hospital, Infirmary Site for their care.

Doug will be missed by many! His good-natured and fun-loving personality have endeared him to all those who met him. Doug was a great individual. His cat, Awesome, misses those early morning brushings!

Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. No visitation or service by request. Interment to take place at a later date.
