Diane and Julia,
I was heartbroken to hear of Tony’s passing. He was so good to me when I was a little boy. He was always laughing and loved spending time with Mike and me. He would visit on weekends in his Volkswagen (and later in his Bronco), always with a small paper bag of candy (sugar coated green gummies or chicken bones) to give us. He took us for drives, thrilling us with excessive speed. I remember one time driving at night on the quiet part of the Old Sambro Road. He turned the headlights off, took his hands off the wheel and screamed. It was pitch black. He often took us to the beach and put us up on his shoulders, running as fast as he could. Another time, he took us out in the woods to collect Y shaped saplings for making slingshots. He made them with an old rubber bicycle tube as the elastic and a shoe tongue as the pocket. They worked well with marbles as the projectiles. When I was really young, I remember him visiting to teach my mother to drive however, I don’t ever remember her turning off the headlights in the dark and taking her hands off the wheel. When he was visiting near my bedtime, I remember him lying in bed with me until I fell asleep. I remember having dinner with him in your apartment, Diane. He made fun of your cooking – which I know he really loved. I also remember having fun at your wedding. I remember the band The Stingbusters playing “Looking Out My Back Door”. You used to visit us nearly every Sunday when Julia was born and later Merrill. When I was older I remember playing Crib with him, spending time with him in his shop watching him work with metal and going rabbit hunting with him. After I left Halifax in 1985, I would only see him occasionally but I thought about him often. I treasure the wonderful memories he gave me and will miss him very much. He was such a wonderful uncle to me and he will never be forgotten.
-Glenn
