Obituary of Rowena M. MacDonald

MacDonald, Rowena Margerita:  It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rowena MacDonald, our precious wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and mother-in-law, on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 in Ocean View Continuing Care, Eastern Passage, NS.  Rowena was born January 24, 1932, to the late Robert Greenwood and Helen Murray (Greenwood). Rowena worked for Dalhousie University in the bookstore, at Simpsons, and had worked for 22 years for Canada Post, from where she retired.  She was a person of deep faith and was one of the founding members of St. Michael’s Church in Spryfield.  In 1948, before St. Michael’s Church was built, she would set up Kent Theatre for Mass on Sundays.  She loved her family dearly, and always wanted to celebrate birthdays and Christmas to the fullest, always wanting her family close by.  Rowena loved her animals, especially her cats, too which there has been many over the years.   Rowena is survived by her loving husband of almost 65 years, Jim, her daughter, Rowena Baker, her son, Jamie (Christina), grandchildren, Allan (Carolyn), Jamie, and Sarah, brother, Joe (Marie), Stewiacke, sister-in-law, Marie Greenwood, Halifax, half-brother, Danny Fleet, half-sisters, Diane Fleet and Nancy Porter, brothers-in-law, Alex Cowie (Dolly), Edward Cowie (Sandra), and Frank Cowie (Diane), as well as many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents and her youngest daughter, Jo-Anne Kelly in June of 2012, which broke her heart.  She was also predeceased by son-in-law, Allan Baker, brothers, Robert, Patrick and Basil, step-father, Gilbert Murray, mother-in-law, Mary Cowie, sisters-in-law, Ethel Greenwood and Florence Greenwood, nephews, Joey Greenwood, Patrick Greenwood (son of Robert), and Patrick Greenwood (son of Patrick), and a special family friend, Herbert Keddy. A special thankyou to Ocean View Continuing Care, especially Dr. Nowlan, and all the amazing staff of Seaside Neighbourhood for all the excellent care and friendship provided to our wife and mom, Rowena, for the past 11 months. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, where visitation will be held on Saturday from 6-8 PM and Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 11 AM from St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Herring Cove Road.  Interment will take place at a later date in Gethsemane Cemetery, Ketch Harbour.  Donations may be made to St. Michael’s Church or Ocean View Continuing Care, Eastern Passage.  Words of condolence may be sent to the family by visiting www.walkerfh.com
