Obituary of Fukuko "Lucy" Saito
92, Halifax. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their mother and grandmother. Lucy passed away peacefully in her home of 52 years on Saturday, January 14, 2017. She was born on August 17, 1924 in Bombay, India to the late Tokio and Matsuyo Ohara.
Upon graduation from The Sacred Hearts School in Osaka, Japan, she married Dr. Akira Saito. In 1956 they and their two sons emigrated to the United States and later settled in Halifax in 1964 as the first Japanese residents in Nova Scotia. Lucy, as she was known by her friends, was a long-time member of the Japanese Society of Halifax, The Westmoor Garden Club and The African Violet Society. She enjoyed travel, her garden and shopping. She gained notoriety among her friends for her role as the "Cookie Lady Grandma" on the Trailer Park Boys. She will be remembered for her elegant grace and cheerful smile.
She will lovingly be remembered by her daughter, Kendra, Halifax; son, Dr. Kim (Robin) Saito; grandson, Dr. Christopher (Emily) Saito; granddaughter, Jessica, all of Arkansas; brother, Akihide Nakamura, Japan; and dear friend who she considered a son, John Smith. She was predeceased by her husband, Akira; eldest son, Erie; four brothers and one sister.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the VON, Bayshore Home Care and to Dr. Joanna Zed, for their compassionate care and support. Also, to the staff of the Best Western, Chocolate Lake Hotel, for their kindness and accommodating out of country family.
Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, where visitation will be held on Friday, January 20 from 7-9 PM. In keeping with the family’s wishes there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
