Obituary of Leonidas "Louis" George Kapsalis
Age 100. The family is saddened to announce the passing of Leonidas (Louis) on Monday May 23, 2016 after a brief illness. He fought a brave and fearless battle and was blessed to be surrounded by his family when he passed away peacefully at the QEII Halifax Infirmary. Louis, the oldest of eight siblings, was born September 1915 in Goranos, Greece. During WWII, he spent 2 years fighting for the freedom of his country and fellow citizens. In March 1959, he immigrated to Canada with his wife and two children, Maria and George, through Pier 21. He worked hard in his adopted country of Canada becoming a successful business owner, running Louis’ Grocery for 22 years in the Spryfield area.
Louis is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Helen; children Maria (Stamatis), George (Aisha), Patricia (Leo) and Tula (Yannis); grandchildren George, Vaso, Gina, Leo K., Eleni, Leo P., Elena, Katerina; great-grandchild Vasilios Leonidas, sisters Katina and Vaso. Louis was predeceased by his grandson Savvas; his parents, George and Amalia; two brothers and three sisters. The family would like to extend their immense gratitude towards the doctors, nurses and support staff of unit 4.2 at the QEII Halifax Infirmary. We sincerely appreciate their kindness and thoughtful care in making Louis’ brief stay as comfortable as possible.
Louis was known for his love of debates, particularly political discussions, and story-telling. Convincing Louis that he had made a mistake or was wrong about a topic was like winning the lottery; it did not happen very often! He loved entertaining his grandchildren with song and dance, and stories of his youth. Some of his passions were landscaping (he liked to keep busy) and teasing his family. He was a force of nature and was active up until the day before he was hospitalized.
