Obituary of Glenville E. Crooks

Glen passed away peacefully May 1st, on his own terms and one day short of his eighty-eighth birthday. Born in Peggy's Cove, he was predeceased by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Frances Jean (née Zinck) and by a brother, Alton. He is survived by his brothers Roger (Sheila), Kent (Lillian), Graden (Betty) and sister Jean (Dale) Mader. He will be remembered with love and missed by his son Harris (Holly) Crooks and daughter Chris (Michael) LaBreche as well as his granddaughters Carolle (Rohan) Fernando, Erin (Jesse) Sparks and Kathryn (Blair) Crooks/Young and his great-grandchildren Cohen and Anil (Fernando), Kieran (Sparks) and Stella (Young). A quiet man of infinite patience, Glen was retired after many years of service with the National Harbours Board as a weighman at the grain elevator. He was a hard worker with a dedicated work ethic he instilled in both his children, in whose careers he took quiet pride. His interests included lobstering and fishing, in his younger years, as well as berry-picking and walking (while gathering golf balls, among other things). He also greatly enjoyed listening to old-time music and the company of his beloved dogs. He was a creature of habit and a dedicated 'collector'. Although Glen was quiet and introverted, he really enjoyed a one-on-one conversation and knew at least something about almost everything. A bit of a 'news-junkie', he liked to keep up on current affairs and held opinions on political characters of every stripe. His ever-present sense of humour will be fondly remembered by friends and family as he dearly loved to tell a joke (often over and over). Since Fran's death, four years ago, Glen was able to continue living in his family home due to the dedicated and loving care provided to him by nephew and niece, Leslie and Bonnie Boutilier. His family is forever grateful to them. A service of remembrance will be held at J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax on Friday, May 6th at 3pm with a reception immediately following. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and a private interment of ashes will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Glen's memory, to the Canadian Diabetic Society or a charity of your choice.
