Obituary of Joyce C. Stevens

Age 68, of Halifax passed away February 2, 2016 at the QEII Halifax Infirmary Site. Born in Saint John, NB on October 17, 1947 she was a daughter of the late Carmela Inez (Clarke) and George William Stevens. Joyce made Halifax her home on January 5, 1985 where she became heavily involved in her community. She volunteered and then worked for St Paul’s United Church Family Resources Institute (FRI)  for 17 ½ years as Staff Assistant and Food Bank Co-coordinator. Joyce set up the class room of Mary Canfield’s GED classes as well as catering the GED Christmas parties and graduations. She also put together a low income family cookbook. After retiring from FRI for health reasons, she volunteered at CityChurch – Hope Ministries Food Bank one day a week as Neta McPhee’s Personal Secretary.  She won two volunteer of the year awards in 1995; one from the Spryfield Community Centre and one from the Nova Scotia Food Bank. She loved to crochet, knit, read, cooking home made meals, sweets, and homemade bread and rolls. Joyce is survived by her half sisters Rose Graves and Janet Dunn, both of Grand Bay, NB; daughter Georgina Veronica Stevens (David) Edmonton; sons Leonard William Gates, Toronto, and Alexander David Richard, Halifax; as well as 11 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; grandparents; brother (Walter) in infancy and a son (JJ) in infancy. Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd, 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, where a visitation will take place Friday February 5 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Funeral service will be held on Saturday February 6 at 11am in the funeral home chapel. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to the Diabetes Association of Canada, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, A local animal shelter or to the St. Pauls Food Bank (173  Old Sambro Rd. Halifax, Nova Scotia).
