Obituary of Reta Mae Palmer
It is with heartfelt sadness mixed with many loving memories that we announce the peaceful passing of our Mom, Reta Mae Palmer (age 97), of Halifax, N.S. at the Qell Halifax Infirmary, surrounded by family. She was born in North Range, Digby County to the late Alfred and Susan (Marshall) Height. Reta is survived by daughters Beverley Palmer Mason (Peter Mason), Halifax; Linda Stanley (Jim), Truro; and son Bruce Palmer (Liz), Kentville; 8 grandchildren: Laura Mason (Christopher Hoad), Toronto; Victoria Minion (Tye), Airdre, Alberta; Julia Stewart (Jim), Ottawa; Matthew Stanley (Stefanie), Malmo, Sweden; Emily Cox (Donald) Truro; Meghan Munro (Steve) Dartmouth; Nicholas Palmer (Regina) Moscow, Russia; Jacqueline Barahona (Dario) Fredericton; 6 great-grandchildren: Lily and Hailey Munro, Evan and Oliver Stanley, Charlotte and Cameron Cox. She was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband William F. Palmer (Bill), and her brothers Aubrey and Gordon Height.
Reta and Bill married May 20, 1949, raised their family and worked side by side in the family business, Palmer Refrigeration Ltd. Reta was active in the community, volunteering with various organizations including the IWK Auxiliary and King's College Alexandra Society. She was a dedicated parishioner of St. Paul's Anglican Church for more than 65 years. She served on Chancel Guild, Ladies Guild, Women's Auxiliary and Mother's Helper Group. While living at the Whynacht's Point, she was a parishioner of the Anglican Parish of French Village. She was an active member of the IODE and the Order of the Eastern Star, where she was awarded her 50 year pin. Reta was an active supporter of Bill's involvement with Masonry, Shrine, and the Refrigeration and Service Engineers Society. They enjoyed many road trips together throughout Canada and the USA and she enjoyed the travel adventures of her children and grandchildren through their travel stories and photos. Reta's family was the focus of her life. She especially enjoyed family gatherings at Whynacht's Point. She always had a strong interest in her family's education and careers. Her concern and compassion was demonstrated by her generous spirit and unfailing ability to think of others. She instilled in her family that strong values and beliefs are the backbone of a life well lived. "Mom, Nanny, Great-nanna" was a determined spirit, a purveyor of stories that helped connect us to our roots, a teacher, and a moral compass to us all. She will be deeply missed and held in hearts and memories forever. Special thanks to the Management and Staff at the Berkeley Bedford, the QEll Emergency Room Staff (Dr. Henneberry and Vivian) and staff of 7.4
