Obituary of Hugh A. Marryatt

Age 79, of Sambro.  It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather on November 5, 2014.  He passed away peacefully with his family by his side in Palliative Care, the VG site, QEII after a short courageous battle with cancer.  Born in West Pennant, he was a son of the late Samuel and Melvina(Finck) Marryatt.  He began his career as a fisherman at an early age.  He was then employed by the Bedford Institute of Oceanography for 25 years where he worked as a cook on "CCGS Navicula" until his retirement in 1998.  He was an avid hunter and also enjoyed fishing and playing cards with his many friends.  He was a diehard Toronto Blue Jays Fan and he never missed a rerun of "Murder She Wrote" until his final days. He loved listening to his Newfoundland music as well as spending time with his grandchildren whether it be attending a hockey game, piano recital or Christmas concert.    Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Nancy(Gray) and their children, Crystal(Sam), Sambro; Tessie(Mike), Halifax; Myles, Alberta; Lee(Jason), Halifax.  He was a loving Poppy to his four grandchildren, Austin, Dale, Connor and Jillian.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.   He will be forever missed by his sisters, Una, Dartmouth; Eva, Halifax; Verna, Halifax; Jessie, Ontario; and Zella(Larry), Ontario.  He was predeceased by brothers, Gerald, Austin, Samuel, George, Cecil and Harvey; sisters, Jean and Bernice.   The entire family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nursing staff of 5A, Palliative Care, the VG site, QEII, who provided such compassionate care. Also, a sincere thanks to the Home Care, Palliative Care team and VON who made it possible for Hugh to be at home for the past few months during his illness.   Cremation has taken place under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd, 149 Herring Cove Road.  Respecting his wishes, there will be no visitation.  A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 10, 2014, in St. James United Church, Sambro at 11 am with Rev. Keltie van Binsbergen officiating.  Reception to follow in the church hall.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Hugh’s memory may be made to St. James United Church, Sambro, or charity of choice.
