Obituary of Muriel Florence Gilkie

Age 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the QEII Halifax Infirmary on October 12, 2014. Born on mothers Day, May 12, 1929, Muriel was a daughter of the late Elias Irving and Bertha Claire (Baker) Hart. Muriel is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Stewart Allan Gilkie. She is also survived by her only son Jeff (Sherrie) Gilkie; sister Doris Callahan; brother Allan (Peggy) Hart; granddaughter Kassy as well as a large number of nieces and nephews. Muriel spent her early days baking at the Sambro Elementary School. She also worked at the Sambro United Church making suppers for the community. Muriel attended and helped bring adult education classes to Sambro such as typing, secretarial, math and English upgrades.  Muriel was predeceased by her parents; grandparents Nelson Baker and Sarah Jane Jenniks as well as siblings Morton, Wray and Gene. Keeping with her wishes, there will be no service or visitation. Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., Halifax. The family would like to express their gratitude towards the nursing staff of QEII 8.4 floor for their kind and gentle service through this difficult time. Donations in Muriel’s name can be made to the St. James Church, Sambro, NS.
