Obituary of Barbara Campbell

Campbell, Barbara Magdalena (Twrdy), 77, of Halifax, NS, passed away peacefully at home on Oct 12, 2012 with her five children at her side. Barbara was born in Gleiwitz, Germany where she lived and survived WWII. She met the love of her life, Terrance Campbell (Soup) and moved to Canada, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax in 1957.Barb and Soup raised six children in Halifax and it was during this time that Barb was able to capture the women’s NS table tennis championship. She was also actively involved in the German Association and celebrated her culture with many people through German radio programming. Barb became actively involved in the Multicultural Association of NS (MANS) as Executive Director. She dedicated 30 years to MANS and successfully worked towards creating a sense of belonging and respect for all cultures. On September 24, 2004 she was officially recognized by the NS Legislature for her work with MANS.  She also received the Progress Women of Excellence Award for Arts and Culture, for which we were all very proud.  During this time Barb was also instrumental in contributing to the Pier 21 "dream" through her volunteer committee work and her passion for the project. During retirement she travelled extensively with the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF) which allowed her to visit many distant and exciting places around the world. Barb is survived by her brother Peter Twrdy (Germany) daughters Betty, Cathy and Susan, her sons Greg and Mike, and her grandchildren Ray, Brian, Sean, Barbara, Patrick and Becca. She was pre-deceased by her son Douglas and her husband Terry (Soup). A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held on Monday, October 15 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Benedict Church with a reception to follow in the church hall.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to charities of one’s choice.
