Obituary of John D. Mitchell

MITCHELL, John Douglas “Johnnie” … 54, Bayside, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 4, 2010. Born in Halifax, he was a cherished son of Jack and Sylvia (Longard) Mitchell. Johnnie was a loving husband, father, grandfather “Papa”, son, brother, brother in-law, uncle, nephew and great friend to many. He was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman who loved hockey and hunting; especially bass fishing with his fishing partner Dennis. He owned and operated Bayside Marine for 34 years. Johnnie won several awards including top salesman for Regal Boats and excellence in customer service with Mercury Marine. He was a member of the Lions Club, the Legion and Citizens on Patrol. He was a servant to the community, truly a “jack of all trades”, helping anyone he could, no job was too big for him to handle. Johnnie was a kind, gentle giant of a man whose hugs and handshakes will never be forgotten. He will be missed by his devoted companion Rocky and many friends. Johnnie will lovingly be remembered by his daughter, Melissa (Bradley) MacRae; son, Andrew; grandchildren, Madison, Jasmine, Lily, Calle and one on the way “Rachel”; parents, Jack and Sylvia Mitchell; brother, Mark (Denise) Mitchell; sisters, Adele Mitchell (Dennis); Rosemarie (Jason) Kirk; father in-law, Nick (Carol) Ryan; brother-in-law Patrick (Cindy) Ryan; sister-in-laws Nancy Ryan, Maria (Deejay) Ead; nieces, Sarah, Ashley and Anna; nephews, Hunter, Michael, Matthew, Steven, Nicholas, Zander, Chris and Connor; large extended family. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Vallerie; mother in-law, Sylvia Ryan; maternal grandparents, Edgar and Francis Longard; paternal grandparents, Harry and Marion Mitchell. Arrangements have been entrusted to J.A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, (477-5601), where visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM and Wednesday, September 8 from St. Matthias Anglican Church, 6131 Chebucto Road, from 12 - 1:30 PM with funeral service to follow at 2 PM, Rev. Helene Burns officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church hall. Interment to take place at a later date. Donations in Johnnie’s memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters.
