Obituary of Royce Allen Schnare

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Royce Allen Schnare, age 100, of Sambro on June 4, 2026. Born October 18, 1925, in East Pennant. He joined the army at 18 and was sent overseas to England during WWII, where he learned and served as a mechanic for several years. Upon return, he worked at the Fish Plant in Sambro, now Sambro Fisheries. He married Irene Hamm in 1951. He then worked in Halifax at Isnor Motors as a mechanic. A few years later, he partnered with Heinz Grabka, and they opened the North End Texaco service station on Gottingen Street in Halifax. He worked there until he retired. He could then be found tinkering around in his garage and working in his garden.

My dad was a kind man, a loving husband, and a wonderful father, who loved pets of all kinds from kittens to horses. He enjoyed the simple things in life, get-togethers with family and friends, Saturday night card games, dances and just life itself. He loved going for drives on Sundays and taking trips on vacation to various Provinces and to the New England States. He also enjoyed attending weddings; there were few he and Irene missed, no matter how far away. He stayed in his own home in Sambro until December 2023, then he moved to Camp Hill Seniors Complex.

Royce was predeceased by his loving wife of 72 years, Irene Schnare (Hamm); His parents, Hannah (Young) & Arthur (Sandy) Schnare; and 10 siblings: Loretta, Arthur, Rhoda, Vera, Oliver, Leslie, Weldon (baby), Nettie, Earl, and Velma.

He is survived by his daughter, June; son-in-law, Alan; and grandson, Jeremy Dempsey. We will miss him. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. We would like to thank Trisha and Loraine for their help while Dad was still living at home and to Lorne for his visits while in Camphill. Also, thank you to the caring staff at Camphill 5 East Garrison Wing for their kind and compassionate care.

There will be a graveside service on June 17th. 2:00 p.m. at the East Pennant Cemetery for family and friends. Reception to follow at St. James United Church Hall, Sambro. Donations can be made to St. James United Church in lieu of flowers.
